Ostensibly this is a macabre and often disgusting Peckinpah film, but it follows a trend in much of his work where a character or characters begin a quest purely pursuing money and pleasure and ultimately experience moral conversion and renounce what they had been pursuing...and cleanse themselves in the blood of the lamb.
